Pierre Bonnard // French, 1867-1947

The Breakfast (Le petit déjeuner), 1922 // Oil on canvas

During the 1880s and 1890s Pierre Bonnard was a leading member of the Nabis, a brotherhood of Post-Impressionist artists who rejected academism and, following the example of Paul Gauguin, used heavy outlines and a more expressionistic application of color. While the Nabis were no longer working together as a group when Bonnard painted Le Petit Déjeuner, the decorative patterning, flattened perspective, and rich coloration of his earlier practice remain evident. Showing a single figure enjoying a cup of coffee at a breakfast table, this work is characteristic of Bonnard, as he frequently depicted scenes of domestic interiors. (x)
